MY Background
Current and past teaching experience and education
MY BACKGROUND
My background has always been in music and teaching. I first started playing the piano at age 7 and I have been playing music ever since. I started playing the cello in elementary school and I was lucky to be able to play in a school district that offered free instrumental music instruction to all students. I joined the school orchestra and soon became more serious on the cello than the piano. Looking back, I was lucky to have such a strong music program in my school district. I also had very inspiring teachers that helped me to grow as a musician. During high school and college I really worked on my own musical skills. I went to Pioneer high school in Ann Arbor and for college I attended Goucher College in Maryland as a music major. After college, during my Masters degree program at the University of Michigan, I began teaching music lessons to children. I really enjoyed combining my love for music with my love for working with children. So, while I was playing music professionally, I began to focus a lot on teaching private lessons. It was after I taught an after-school Orchestra program that I decided to go back and get my teaching certificate to teach in the schools. Once I received my certificate I began teaching in Livingston County for three years. Then, I worked in Ann Arbor schools for a couple of years while I taught private music lessons as well. I have worked now in Detroit for Eight years at Martin Luther King Education Academy as a teacher. I currently teach general and Instrumental music at MLK. Teaching has really been a calling for me and I want to continue teaching and expand my options as a teacher with my ESL certification. Teaching is a demanding job but also very rewarding and I have so many students that are appreciative of the teaching that I have to offer them. |
